About the Site

This website is dedicated to the memory of Smt. D. Pattammal, a musician, musicologist and a composer and above all a great human being. Coming from a humble background and without any support systems, she managed to compose over 650 songs in Tamil and also compile over 5000 ragas in her Ragapravaham.

The website has sections that contain most of her compositions with notation. There is a separate section for the Ragapravaham. Search facility is provided to get details of any raga. It is also possible to search and locate the composition of Smt D Pattammal in a given raga.

The audio section has the renditions of the compositions of Smt. D. Pattammal by eminent artistes. Her compositions under ISAI THUVAKKA PAADALGAL have been sung by young children and beginners in carnatic music. When you are listening to a song from the Audio section of the webpage it is possible to simultaneously look at the composition text with notation .

We have listed the various awards and prizes won by Smt. D. Pattammal and the related materials . There are a number of photographs of Smt. Pattammal and her husband Dr. M. N. Dhandapani who gave her excellent support all through her musical career and co-authored Ragapravaham. Photographs taken at the various release functions and D. Pattammal memorial concerts have also been displayed.

The website has been created to benefit all those who love modern tamil compositions. Since they are provided with notations it will be very easy for them to practice and sing the songs. Isai Thuvakka Paadalgal will be very useful to young children. Schools could use them for prayer songs.

Ragapravaham has been published a number of times and got sold out. Now we have this permanently in this website as a source of reference for all the musicians and music lovers.

We have made our best attempts to reproduce the original texts with the notations. But there could be some mistakes. We request you to bring to our attention whenever you notice something wrong in the notations or in Ragapravaham, and we shall amend as necessary.

All this would not have been possible but for the relentless support given by a team of dedicated specialists that included Riswan and Arun who keyed in the Compositions and notations in Tamil as also the Ragapravaham in both English and Tamil.

Ms Uma Krishnaswamy and Mrs Sumathi Narayanan helped us by scrutinizing the entered data. We thank Ms Subashri Mani for helping us in multiple ways in our efforts. We are indebted to Mrs Sushila Natraj for helping us check the translated texts and Dr Radha Bhaskar for writing a note on the 72 Melakartha system.
